We are starting to work with 2,500 NIT LCDs for window displays and 5,000 NIT LCDs for outdoor applications. We are currently working on an outdoor building directory project with 1,500 NIT touch screens. New LED backlights on LCD screens allow practical cost effective digital signage projects outdoors in full daylight.
As the industry grows, manufacturers are offering new products designed for digital signage. These high brightness screens are only available in 46 and 65 inch sizes so far but 46 is a very common and useful size for outdoor menus, posters and building directories. For large outdoor signs with a long viewing distance LED is still king but you need the high resolution of LCD for small text in menus, playing movie trailers and signage with a close viewing distance.
Printed menus and posters have been the norm until now, but the new high brightness LCDs bring the benefits of digital signage outdoors at a practical cost. Menus are a big business for us. Our 700 NIT indoor posters are very popular for QSR menus. These new high brightness screens allow outdoor and window signage to be connected to the same control system as the indoor menus with all of the scheduling and animation features.
We live in Southern California where many shopping and entertainment venues are designed for outdoor foot traffic; where these new displays will be ideal. That outdoor “happy hour” poster can come to life and really attract attention playing a video of your cocktail creations. Ambient light sensors can adjust the brightness automatically so your daylight screen will offer comfortable viewing at night.
